More New Sony DSLRs On the Way

author Linda Barger posted 8/27/2009

Sony just came out with three new alpha DSLR cameras (DSLR-α500, the DSLR-α550 and DSLR-α850) that are designed for experienced shooters looking for value and great SLR performance.

The new α500 and α550 cameras will help photo enthusiasts capture clearer shots in low-light scenarios and they also provide faster shooting speeds. Sony has added some other cool technologies to these DSLRs like in-camera High Dynamic Range (HDR) and new Live View features.

Other features include:

-Face Detection and Smile Shutter with Live View

-Seven frames per second shooting (α550)

-An in-camera High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature for capturing highlights and shadows

We are also introducing an α850 that delivers ultra-fine picture quality with a full-frame CMOS sensor and fast image processing, providing high-speed continuous shooting of 24.6 megapixel images at up to three frames per second. At just under $2,000, this camera is a perfect choice for the seasoned photographer.

Hi ! 2 years ago, before launching the Alpha 900, Sony had a blog at this adress http://news.sel.sony.com/electronicsblog/ where one could post comments or explain desires about this future flagship camera. Stupidly, I believed it was meaning that Sony wanted to better serve high-end customers. This is why I posted some questions about an integrated flash in the Alpha 900. I was not the first to ask for a full-frame camera with build-in flash. And the Sony manager who was answering to all of us never promised anything about it but said that Sony was very interested in our comments. The Alpha 900 came without build-in flash. The Alpha 850 is now here without build-in flash. Now it is time to rethink my relation with Sony. As it seems to be true, Sony has nothing to do with my opinion. In this case, I will have to consider the possibility to sell all my lenses and cameras to buy a real full-frame camera from a real camera maker and forget that I believed in the false promises of a gadget seller...

Can someone please help me: Is it true that i can´t watch my Alpha 900 raw files on my Playstation 3 that is connected to my Sony Bravia? I found a Vista update for my PC on your Sony download sites but none for my PS3? Please help me...

I have to agree with Herman on this one, they look nice, but are missing many features some photographers would like to see. I hoped Sony would view potential buyers for these as more experienced, and adjust the feature set to meet that. It's a hard choice to stay with Sony, when there are so many other strong cameras around. Would have been great to have had a non live view models with a larger viewfinder. Oh, do we really need smile detection?? Seems Sony has it's priorities wrong on this one.

As my last blog entry seems to have dissapeared i will ask again: Will there be any IFA fair blog coverage from your side regarding new Sony products?

  • 9/6/2009

Hi, will you give us some blog coverage from IFA fair Berlin ? I heard that Sir Howard Stringer gave some hints about Sony 3D plans for the next years. I would love to have the chance to see Ice Age 3D on my Bravia TV set at home.

Nice to see these models. But I noticed a few problems. Many users of your entry models requested a number of features in a firmware update. As an A350 owner, it was a huge let down for Sony to ignore those calls. Both new models still don't have mirror lock up, we don't have AEL spot toggle either, or other features that used to be present in the A100 (which I also own) What's going on with Sony, do you not understand what photographers are looking for? I've seen so many posts here from Alpha users, it's impossible to not get a good idea of what they are looking for, yet you give us this???
