Words Move Me

author Valerie Motis posted 8/25/2009

It's a big day for the Reader group.

In fact, it's been a big month: We unveiled our Reader Pocket Edition and Reader Daily Edition and announced new pricing for bestsellers and new releases at our eBook store as well as our intention to convert everything over to an open industry standard format – EPUB. What else could there be to say, right?

Well, you have been clamoring for a from Sony and today we unveiled it at a press conference at the New York Public Library. Our Reader Daily Edition features 3G connectivity and a unique 7-inch touch screen display, perfect for displaying pages side by side or for newspaper layouts. Same great electronic paper, plus the ability to search, take notes and highlight with your finger or the included stylus. Run into a word you don't know? The dictionary is just a tap away. The Daily Edition, which sells for about $399, is expected to be available just in time for the holidays.

But wait, there's more. Today also marks the launch of a new online destination empowering readers to share their favorite moments from the literature they love: wordsmoveme.com, Here, we continue to deliver on our promise of making reading a shared experience. By connecting you through the literature and words you love, WordsMoveMe enables you to express your individuality, your own stories and discuss the impact that literature has on your life. Check it out and add your favorite literary moment.

I can't say how happy I am to see a serious book reader from a company that is willing to support the buying, lending, and renting of ebooks. I love books and I love libraries. The idea of having access to millions of books at will is intoxicating. The Kindle, however, troubles me, especially after the 1984 incident. I would really like to be able to donate an ebook that I buy to my local public library. Libraries both archive material and lend vast amounts of purchased in-copyright information, both functions being essential in a democratic society. It may not be important now, but the first time a book becomes available digital only, it will be immensely important. I wish Sony the very best of luck in the marketplace for the goodwill shown with your policies.

I have owned a PRS-500 and now I have a PRS-700 reader. I am NEVER without it, it goes everywhere with me. I didn't think that the reader could get much better, but I am extremely excited about the release of the Sony Daily Edition Reader. My fiance and I have already decided that we will be purchasing at least two as soon as the opportunity is available. However, I am more than willing to be a volunteer to test the new reader for Sony. I moderate an ebook forum and I am the owner and admin of an international law enforcement forum that has worldwide members that will also be ordering the new reader. Please keep me in mind for testing volunteers! Thanks so much, Sony! You all ROCK! Wendy

As a Sony employee...congrats on the wireless Reader and wordsmoveme.com. Really great to see! Next, how about being able to highlight a phrase from a digital book I could be reading at that moment on my wireless Reader and have it automatically be posted on wordsmoveme.com? I would really enjoy sharing in near real time.
